Michel Rouanez
The complexity of the vodou ceremony, with hougans and vevers
Michel, whose father, Dieudonne Rouanez is also a renowned artist, was born in Port-au-Prince in 1956, where he now resides. Initially, he learned his skills with his father then studied for two years at "L'Ecole Nationale des Arts" in Port-au-Prince.
Michel's works were shown in a group exhibition in Martinique in 1993, then in two shows at the Musée du Pantéon Nationale in Port-au-Prince in 1995.
These were followed by an important show in Japan in 1996 and he was part of a group exhibition of Haitian artists in the Haitian capital this same year.
A brilliant colourist, Michel Rouanez imbues his subject matter with dignity, from the simplest still life painted in the great mannerist tradition to the complexity of the vodou ceremony, complete with hougans and vevers
