Frantz Zephirin

An intricate blending of styles in pointilism and pastels

Following the lead of other Haitian masters, Zephirin has captured a style which blends intricate pointilism and soft, pastel shades into magnificently detailed, striking works

Frantz Zephirin was born in Cap Haitien, on December 10, 1968. He learned to paint at the same time that he was learning how to read, watching his uncle, the Haitian painter Antoine Obin, work.
By seven, determined to try his hand at painting, he would steal paint from his uncle, housing it in bottlecaps.
By eight, he was selling paintings to the tourists from cruise ships.
By twelve, he dropped out of school to paint, much to his mother’s consternation.
And, by age thirteen, he was lying about his age and selling work to galleries.
He moved to Port-au-Prince and became associated with the Galerie Monnin. Painting in a Cap Haitien style was not successful for him. Frustrated, he began to paint people as animals and with this style, his work attracted a following. His talent, unlimited imagination and perfectionism had come together.
He has been featured in many books on Haitian art. He has exhibited internationally, and won numerous awards. Two of his paintings are featured in the Sacred Arts of Haitian Vodou exhibit (currently in New York). A young artist, he is already considered one of Haiti’s best.
Zephirin lives with his wife and children in Port-au-Prince.
